About the Author
Howard Abadinsky is professor of criminal justice at St John's University. He served eight years as an inspector for the Cook County, Illinois, sheriff and 15 years as a New York state parole officer and senior parole officer. The founder of the International Association for the Study of Organized Crime, he also served as a consultant to the President's Commission on Organized Crime. In fact, this is the best daily DEVO I’ve ever owned. With Tripp brilliance he reminds me (the reader) every day of my desperate and exclusive need for the good news of Jesus: the one who came to save me from me. To date I have purchased almost 50 copies of this book, as it is my go-to gift for believers and non-believers.Note: the good news of Jesus is for sinners (those who have not yet believed) in need of grace and the good news of Jesus is for those who have already believed (sinners saved by grace). You will enjoy every morning when you experience New Morning Mercies.

The best. I want to share a quick miracle story about how God spoke to me through this devotional . Each page is dated for you to read on that day. I hadn’t picked up my Bible in a year, and I bought this devotional to help me read every morning. First day I received this devotional I started to read it to catch up to todays date(without my bible at first). Suddenly the entry on January 7 became way to personal as if God was speaking directly to me; I indexed it, highlighted it and I became emotional about it. At the end of the entry It told me to read ROMANS 8, somehow I remembered my forgotten bible was in the trunk of my car (had been there for almost a year) God led me to go see what Romans 8 was about, so I went get to get from my car. When I randomly opened the Bible I found a note by my girlfriend, from 4 years ago written in first person, as if God was speaking directly to me. I read it and wow! it spoke about what I read in the devotional and what I was going struggling with. Suddenly, almost crying, I folded back the note and put it back to where I found it, come to find out the note was in ROMANS 8. I cried.This is the best companion to my bible and I read them both every morning. God keeps talking to me through both, extremely insightful entries that make you think and give you a lot of “aha!” Moments.

This book isn't a self help book... It's a book that is meant to remind you that you can't help yourself. This book reminds you to place your trust in the one who can change you and draw you deeper into His loving kindness.Paul Tripp recognizes a lot of moments in our lives that constantly need attention, correction, and discipline. He focused on the little moments we will have on a regular basis and then reminds us to focus on the one who purchased us, because without Christ, little moments can turn into mountainous problems.If there is one book i suggest you take 3 minutes every morning to read it's this one.

I bought this as a gift for a friend, but I sneaked a little peak inside. I loved the devotions. If you love Paul David Tripp's other stuff, you will be pleased. The book is a nice book too. It has good weight paper (not the cheap stuff you can see through) and the type is easily readable. I don't have to break out the reading glasses. The gift edition does look like a gift edition. It looks special. And my friend has commented multiple times about how much she loves it.

With the exception of Charles Spurgeon's "Morning and Evening", I don't think I've read a devotion that's as useful, practical, and theological as this one. Tripp (and his mustache) base the title off of Lamentations 3, when God says His mercies are new every morning. I've been reading this each day for the past month, and I'm blasted with encouragement, conviction, Scripture, and deep theological Gospel truths that are taken from the ivory tower of Biblical scholars and brought down to everyday level. Both the Seminary student and the middle schooler can glean great encouragement from New Morning Mercies.The length is perfect. The setup is a short tweet (around 140 characters), a page where Tripp expands on that tweet, and a passage of Scripture to study and meditate on. I love the tweets at the beginning. They are the thesis and takeaway. I write one on a notecard each morning and look at it throughout the rest of the day. I've already bought 3 copies as Christmas gifts for others. If there is one devotion to go through this year, it's this one!

Tripp is one of the most well spoken, clearly worded authors I have ever read. His work is truly at “street level” as he calls it. Definitely God inspired writing. Previous to and everyday since the loss of our 24 year old son, Tripp has assisted in helping me by the power of God and His unchanging Word to realize the infinite power and measure of grace that can only come from our “Sovereign Savior King.” Thank you Paul for an inspiring devotional that truly meets us right where we are in every good and challenging circumstance in our lives.

About the Author

Dr. Dingqing Li is executive director and senior scientist, Government Programs and Engineering Services, with the Transportation Technology Center, Inc, a subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads. He has more than 25 years of research, testing, modeling, consulting, and academic experience in railway engineering, and has published more than 200 technical papers and reports. Dr. Li received his Ph.D in civil engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1994, and received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Central South University in China. Dr. Li is a registered professional engineer, and is a member of AREMA and ASCE.

Dr. James (Jim) Hyslip is president of HyGround Engineering (Williamsburg, Massachusetts), where he provides consulting services in the areas of railway and geotechnical engineering. Dr. Hyslip has more than 25 years of experience in railroad engineering and geotechnical consulting, including positions as track supervisor (roadmaster) and engineer of soil mechanics at the Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail). Additionally, he was a geotechnical engineer with GeoMechanics, Inc. (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). Dr. Hyslip has engineering degrees from Bucknell University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and is registered in the USA as a professional engineer.

Dr. Theodore (Ted) Sussmann is a civil engineer with a focus on railroad geotechnical infrastructure engineering. He has 20 years of experience in characterizing track materials and structural response for safety and reliability evaluation, life-cycle cost assessment, and maintenance planning to support infrastructure sustainability. Dr. Sussmann teaches civil engineering at the University of Hartford, and has led track research at the Volpe Center. He was a research fellow at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he received his B.S.C.E. (Magna Cum Laude), M.S.C.E., and Ph.D. Dr. Sussmann is also a member of ASCE, AREMA, Tau Beta Pi, and Chi Epsilon.

Dr. Steven Chrismer is a senior mechanical track and vehicle engineer with LTK Engineering, where he specializes in dynamic vehicle-track interaction and track engineering. Dr. Chrismer has 33 years of rail industry experience mainly devoted to developing railway geotechnology for freight loading, including heavy haul, for the Association of American Railroads Research and Test Department. He has also worked for Amtrak, where he applied railway geotechnology to high-speed passenger service. He is chairman of the AREMA High Speed Rail Systems Committee, and is a registered professional engineer.

About the Author
Lee Crockett is a national award-winning designer, marketing consultant, entrepreneur, artist, author, and international keynote speaker. He is the director of media for the InfoSavvy Group and the managing partner of the 21st Century Fluency Project. This book has great info - it is a real asset to anyone who lives in or is visiting the Portland area. It allows you to quickly pick out a hike that will suit your needs, based on hike length, location, elevation, etc. It's great for anyone looking for options for daytrips outside of the city, and the variety of options available is stunning.The only reason that this guide doesn't get five stars is because the design is ugly and a bit clunky (look at that cover... the same design philosophy persists through the book).

Love this book! I go hiking once a week, and I already use Scott Cook’s Curious Gorge and Hiking the Pacific Northwest, so having someone else’s updated perspective and knowledge into the mix is wonderful. This book has many long and short hikes and I love reading the history for each it gives. It gives all the information you might need for a hike, such as how long it will take, how many miles, elevation, if there’s a fee, if it’s kid or dog friendly, what season to go, etc. it’s just a great hiking book and I definitely reccomend!

Over the past 25 years I've bought dozens of Pacific Northwest hiking guides and this is just about the most enjoyable one I've ever owned. It is about the only hiking guide I've ever sat down and systematically read from cover to cover, simply because it was such a joy to read and because it contained so many treasures. The author isn't merely interested in telling you how to get there and how not to miss a turn in the trail, but he shows a genuine love for each of these hikes, pointing out what is amazing about each of them, often giving a little history about the trail or other anecdotes associated with a hike, including personal experiences which are genuinely amusing or informative. I especially enjoy his appreciation of trails through old growth forests, something you don't often see in hiking guides. Most hiking guides seem to get worked up only by big, expansive views, but this author sees beauty and magnificence on all scales. Although I was familiar with at least half of these hikes, I learned about a lot of new ones that I've already started exploring. For example, check out the old growth noble firs along the PCT from Barlow Pass to the overlooks at White River Canyon. These trees are absolutely mind-boggling, not because they're big around but because they grow so amazingly tall and straight. It stimulated me to read more about these trees and I learned that they can soar into such heights with so little girth because the wood is hard and light. No Douglas Fir could get this tall without putting six feet of girth on themselves. Here you see flawless, branchless trunks as straight as nature can make them, no more than three to four feet in diameter with no perceptible taper rising two hundred feet like the pillars in a cathedral before finally displaying a puff of foliage at the top no more than 15 feet wide and 30 feet tall. And then the emerald forest of moss-infested silver firs and mountain hemlocks that follow closer to timberline have the head shaking in wonder over such stunning beauty. Thanks to this author, I discovered this incredibly beautiful section of trail after hiking all over Mt. Hood for 25 years without having discovered it. There are lots of other new possibilities of this magnitude for me that I am eager to try out, thanks to the enthusiasm and attention to detail of this author.

This is an absolutely "must have" book for hiking in the area around Portland, Oregon, which includes hikes near Mount Hood, Mt. Ste. Helens, the Coast, hikes within Portland, and various National Forests and State Parks. I had and used an earlier version of this book and absolutely loved it, and this update is fantastic. The descriptions of each hike are useful, personal, and practical. Directions to the starting point are easy to follow, and the hike profile showing altitude changes is very useful at gauging how difficult a particular hike might turn out to be. While I would love to see more photos, the photos that are in the book are a good start and allow me to know what to expect on the hike.I got other hiking books for the area, as well as using websites, but I found myself going back to this book again and again because it's so well-written and practical. I really wish I had discovered this book earlier, because quite honestly, I wasted years missing out on some fantastic, easy-to-do hikes out of simple ignorance. So, don't make the same mistake I did--get this book and get out there.Since each hike listed includes an evaluation of difficulty--easy, moderate, strenuous--as well as distance, it's easy to find a hike that suits your level of skill and how long you want to hike. For example, when my parents came to visit, I was able to find a hike that wasn't going to be too long or difficult for them (Trillium Lake), and when my young nephew came to visit, I selected longer, moderate hikes (Ramona Falls and Silver Falls State Park). This particular edition, the 5th edition, has some useful features: in the first few pages of the book are summary charts showing each listed hike, distance, difficulty, and best time, as well as whether they are wheelchair-friendly, have good views, or are good for runners. In the back of the book are appendices listing additional resources.This is a great book that I am confident you will love. It's a practical and well-balanced book, well-written and interesting, with a great selection of hikes. It's a must have book and one that is best purchased as a hard-copy rather than as a Kindle version.

I was nervous about trying to find good, informative books on hiking. My experience has been that I'd have to purchase several books in order to get all the information I want. I have found that this book is not only thorough, but it is organized in a way that is easy to read, easy to flip through, and well organized. The only thing I could complain about is that I wish there were more maps--in Oregon there are so many very rural places and some of these places aren't all that close to much--but to see what it was closest *to* might help. BIG plus is the elevation maps. I love those.
