With the penchant of modern Neopagans to ignore the left hand path and see only the good and healing parts of the path ignoring the underworld and Fate, one doesn't see too many works on destructive and retaliation magics except in history and anthropology texts. In grimoires from the Middle Ages and stone and metal tablets from the times of ancient Greece, curses or "death and destruction magic", as the author puts it, were commonplace.

For being a slim volume, Death and Destruction is packed with lore and spells; from different types of spells (poppet, candle, foot track, and jar or bottle spells) to incredibly specific spells for each possible situation the spell-caster may be in. The spells themselves range from simple and subtle to hardcore and nasty - and some of which are not for the feint of heart or stomach however - so if you'd rather stick with protective practices than destructive ones, this is not the title for you. Talia Felix knows her ingredients and methods well. I was indeed amused and inspired by the wonderful images throughout the book, carefully selected by the author. These images and corresponding contexts, together with the thoughtful considerations of the difficulties of the freshmen to solid state physics, who may find it hard to follow the maths in the classics like Kittel’s or Mermin’s, fulfills very well the goal of the author … this book is fun, at least for me! Why not have a copy together with Kittel’s and Mermin’s for the visiting undergraduate or even postgraduate students who are becoming frustrated with classics.

About the Author

Sharon Ann Holgate is a freelance science writer and broadcaster. She has presented on BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service, presented video podcasts for medical research charity the Myrovlytis Trust, and competed in a "Boffins Special" on The Weakest Link. She earned a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Sussex, where she was a Visiting Fellow in Physics and Astronomy for nine years. Her articles have appeared in New Scientist, The Times Higher Education Supplement, Science Careers, Flipside, E&T, Focus, Physics World, Interactions, Modern Astronomer, and Astronomy Now. Her first book The Way Science Works (co-authored with Robin Kerrod) was shortlisted for the Royal Society Junior Books Prize. She was also shortlisted for the broadcasting category of the Association of British Science Writers' Awards in 2005.
